Background of the Study:
Human trafficking remains one of the most pervasive forms of organized crime globally, with Nigeria being a significant source, transit, and destination country for trafficked persons. In Adamawa State, especially in Yola South, human trafficking has been a growing concern, with women and children being the most vulnerable groups. Traffickers often exploit vulnerable individuals, coercing them into forced labor, prostitution, and other forms of exploitation (Kure, 2023). Despite the enactment of laws such as the Trafficking in Persons (Prohibition) Law Enforcement and Administration Act, the implementation of these laws remains inconsistent, particularly in regions like Yola South.

This study aims to investigate the effectiveness of law enforcement in addressing human trafficking in Yola South. It will explore the role of local law enforcement agencies in combating human trafficking, the challenges they face, and the extent to which they collaborate with national and international bodies in protecting victims of trafficking. The study will also assess the awareness levels of citizens regarding the risks and signs of human trafficking and evaluate the support systems in place for victims.

Statement of the Problem:
Human trafficking is a grave violation of human rights that has affected numerous individuals in Yola South, Adamawa State. Despite efforts by the government to combat this issue through laws and programs, law enforcement agencies continue to struggle with effectively curbing the prevalence of trafficking. This study seeks to evaluate the capacity and effectiveness of law enforcement in preventing and responding to human trafficking cases in Yola South, as well as to identify the gaps in the enforcement of anti-trafficking laws.

Objectives of the Study:

  1. To assess the effectiveness of law enforcement agencies in combating human trafficking in Yola South, Adamawa State.

  2. To examine the challenges faced by law enforcement agencies in addressing human trafficking.

  3. To propose recommendations for improving the enforcement of anti-human trafficking laws in Yola South.

Research Questions:

  1. How effective are law enforcement agencies in combating human trafficking in Yola South?

  2. What are the major challenges faced by law enforcement agencies in addressing human trafficking?

  3. What strategies can be implemented to improve the effectiveness of law enforcement in preventing human trafficking in Yola South?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Law enforcement agencies in Yola South are ineffective in curbing human trafficking due to limited resources and inadequate training.

  2. The lack of coordination between local and national law enforcement agencies hinders the fight against human trafficking in Yola South.

  3. Public awareness campaigns and improved law enforcement practices can significantly reduce the prevalence of human trafficking in Yola South.

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
The study will focus on the effectiveness of law enforcement in preventing and addressing human trafficking in Yola South, Adamawa State. It will also examine the challenges faced by law enforcement and the role of local communities in tackling trafficking. Limitations include potential reluctance from law enforcement officials to disclose information about sensitive cases and the difficulty of accessing detailed data on trafficking activities.

Definitions of Terms:

  • Human Trafficking: The illegal trade or exploitation of people through force, fraud, or coercion for purposes such as sexual exploitation or forced labor.

  • Law Enforcement: The agencies and officers responsible for enforcing laws, maintaining public order, and ensuring justice.

  • Trafficking Victims: Individuals who are coerced, deceived, or forced into situations of exploitation, including forced labor, sex work, or involuntary servitude.
